Monroe, Juneau, Jackson, Genealogical Workshop
Hello to everyone that is researching their family or wants to be. My name is Kathy Pulham, and I am with the Monroe, Juneau, and Jackson county’s Genealogical Workshop. Our aim is to help fellow researchers, just starting or long standing, to learn the ins and outs of Genealogy and research.
What is Genealogy? Genealogy (from Greek: γενεαλογία genealogia from γενεά genea, "generation" and λόγος logos, "knowledge"), also known as family history, is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. Genealogists use oral interviews, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family and to demonstrate kinship and pedigrees of its members. The results are often displayed in charts or written as narratives. (Source: Wikipedia)
Well, let us get you started on the fun. (Warning: Genealogy can be additive)
Write what you know about yourself and your family. Print your full names (including maiden name for married ladies), date and place of birth, marriage date and place and to whom, and the same information for your children.
Now comes the hard part. Within the last 10 years, having proof through certificates or copies of the documents or where they can be located is recommended. It is called “Cite your source.” This is for future generations to be able to find the same information. Birth certificate, marriage license and death certificate are called vital records. These records are located at Register Deeds offices in the county of event.
Follow the same for your parents, grandparents and as far back as you can go. Don’t forget the death dates, place of death and burial location if you know them. If you want to find this information, start in your attic or basement, and if you find photos, make sure you know who they are. Hint: Don’t forget to label your own photos for future generations. Ask your parents or other family members for help. If you have a question at anytime, you can contact us at mjjworkshop@yahoo.com.
