The very word, Balkanization, has come to mean the fragmentation of an area, country, or region into multiple smaller and hostile units.
My wife, Barb, and I recently enjoyed an eight-day Viking River Cruise on the
Danube river, with ports of call in five countries: Hungary, Croatia, Serbia,
Bulgaria, and Romania.

When my wife and I decided upon the Driftless Area as our retirement home and found a house in Hillsboro that would suit our needs, the next step, before making an offer, was to check out the town.
Folks in the Driftless Area know a good thing when they see it; we tend to stick around “God’s Country,” as we call it, even on vacation. Occasionally, however, especially in the depth of winter, we slip away.
Wonewoc, Wisconsin, with a population of some 800 souls, is steeped in history. A newly dedicated mural displays that history to motorists driving through town on State Highway 33 as well as to residents who patronize the library or gather for concerts on the library lawn.

Since I had just moved to Hillsboro from Chicago, I took the bait. “No idea,” I said to my new neighbor, “Why are people in Hillsboro smarter than people in Chicago?”
“Because,” he said, “everyone in Hillsboro knows where Chicago is, but no one in Chicago knows where Hillsboro is.”
